Most Unusual Travel Experience

I have plenty of 'em, but the weirdest one was being on a red-eye flight from Seattle to Georgia. I was in the middle section, the movie was some Ben Afflack/Sam Jackson vehicle. This girl next to me fell asleep on my shoulder.

Her husband was not amused.

So, I sat for about four hours with a girl on my shoulder in fear of my life of the husband next to me. I didn't move. I kissed the ground when I was in Georgia, and had some weird-ass fried gook at the airport.

What was your most unusual travel experience?

Conversation Starter No. 1362 1/2

Pat Morita died today, and all CNN could come up with was his role in the Karate Kid (later, they half-redeemed themselves by changing the headline to "Happy Days and Karate Kid star Pat Morita dies," but too little too late, if you know what I mean...)

Anyway -- got me wondering about the way this would translate to even the lesser-famed ones such as ourselves.

When you die, what embarrassingly successful-slash-well-known yet entirely unrespectful venture of YOURS do you fear will end up in YOUR obit headline? True stories only, please...

Playboy dot com (yes, again, I do read it for the articles) is holding a poll for the sexiest cartoon 'toon drawn. And as of right now, Boop is second to last in the polls. Which is a crime. How the hell is Penelope Pitstop sexier than Betty Boop?!?

I played all the sound clips on the page, and Betty is the one that still melts my heart.

So,vote for Boop. I think she's sexier than hell...even for a 75 year old.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving MEMORY?

Mine is coming home from college for a quick holiday, me and my folks eating dinner, and doing everything we can to avoid an endlessly hungry dalmation and maltese from gobbling up the grub before we could.

Of course, the dalmation got most of the food anyway...thanks to our short short dinner table and my dalmation's big big snout.

The_Lex's Thesis/Plan, the Topic on Everyone's Mind

I just thought I would prop up this topic to another main entry becuase it's old enough.

After this initial framing, things will become clear enough. Sister Novena wrote:

This is probably coming too late to be noticed, but...

In support of Lex's reluctance to finish his Plan, I'd just point out that I'm actually very glad I took seven years to get back to it after leaving That School. Firstly because, frankly, the faculty in my subject at the time I left just wasn't up to snuff, but more importantly because I could not possibly have done as good a job at 22 as I've done at 29. Part of that is just down to the increased discipline that comes with age, but a lot more of the credit goes to having spent the intervening years working in the field. I came back to finish because I'd spent seven years thinking and doing, gradually building little theories and taking reams of mental notes, and evenutally got to a place in life where I wanted to sit down for a while and codify all the ideas that had collected in my mind, take some time to sort out my thoughts.

I've nearly finished that process now, and while the Plan I've ultimately written has little to do with the one I began years ago, and doesn't look all that much like the one I intended to write a year ago, it's exactly the Plan I needed to write. No, having written it won't make much difference to my professional life, but it's done a hell of a lot for my intellectual and creative life, and I'm glad to have done it. I'm even more glad to have waited until I could do it with the accumulated knowledge of years in the field behind me.

Lex, you'll know when you're ready to finish that Plan; no need to rush anything. If it's not going to make any difference anyway, you might as well wait until you can do one that might mean something to you personally.

Posted by Sister Novena | Saturday, November 19, 2005 7:40:16 PM

Thanks for the support, Sister.

I also can empathize with a lot of what you've said.

Nonetheless, I take exception to labelling my sentiment toward not finishing my Plan by now as "reluctance." I would rather address it as "incapability." Calling it "reluctance," I feel, feeds into the "just do it" rhetoric and the feeling I get of other people pretty much attributing a character flaw to me. I would rather be incapable then have a character flaw (even some might consider my stubborness a character flaw).

And I haven't actively been reluctant to finish my Plan. I've tried my damdest to do it. I just simply haven't been able to do so because I haven't met the conditions of having the necessary facts and concepts. Once I get those, I'm set.

Now, lately though, I've been having problems with time and priority management. If I didn't have those management issues, I would probably be dancing with joy at the progress I make with it. I can't wait until the holidays end, I get a job in Chicago and move there. . .work will actually get done this huge project of mine.

Best and worst thanksgiving memory...

Worst Thanksgiving Memory for me: My ma cooking a turkey and almost setting the microwave on fire in doing so.

That and the time she didn't take out the microwave probe and I ended up chewing on it "What is this crunchy thing in the turkey?"

Best Thanksgiving memory: When me and my family WENT OUT FOR DINNER.

I've got a fever of a hundred and three

Actually, it's just 102. But do they write songs about 102 fevers? No. They do not.

I keep having dreams about the New York Times Sunday Vows section (something I've never been a regular reader of, nor does it weigh heavily on my conscious mind). I also had a dream wherein I had super powers. My powers were prophecy (but all my prophecies were things like I'm gonna sleep another hour) and the ability to ride a special city bus just for sick people. It went to a pool hall, but it was closed.

If you had super powers, what would they be?

Topic Something or Other: Fear

1. As a child (of around 8 or so) I was afraid of accidentally dousing myself in liquid nitrogen and shattering. I think Newton's Apple or 3-2-1 Contact! was to blame.

2. I was also afraid of inadvertantly drinking blood, and becoming a vampire.

3. I have a strong aversion to answering phones.

4. I have nightmares about fish.

5. Last night at around 2:00 AM, I woke convinced that someone was going to try and break in. I sat awake until 7:00. Around 4:00 AM, my boyfriend said "cheese" in his sleep.

6. I am afraid of small doors. What goes through them?

Best Worst Movie You've Ever Seen?

The best worst I've ever seen was Comin' at Ya!

It was around 1980, right when there was still a reason to go to the movies. It was a terrible spaghetti western with barely any plot whatsoever - but hell, it was a 3-D movie filled with bats, and mice, and guns all..um, coming at you, through the movie screen.

And this was the fun part: watching your friends and bunches of folks freak out at the screen.

Those were the days...who cared about the plot or acting? It sucked...the 3-D stuff was what you paid for.

Runner up: She Devils on Wheels. MANEATERS FOREVER! (no, it wasn't a porn movie now...)

What was the best worst (or worst best) movie you've seen?

triskaidekaphilia, can I play on your lawn?

Woo hoo! I get the number 13 on my posty.

If it were not for the IP info that sitemeter provides, I would have NO IDEA which college "that college" is. I went to "another college" which will be extremely obscure. I attended back when the alphabet was still being ratified and divinity was the only subject in which you could get a degree: you had to show proficiency in animal sacrifice and auguring from the guts of the sacrifices.

Oddly enough I still think I am the same person I was then.

Men my age are expected only have one thing to say to the likes of this motley company with which I now cast my lot: "Hey! You kids! Get off my lawn!"

Speaking of your turf: If VT does secede, will I be able to get some kind of honorary citizenship and sneak in before you barricade Interstate 91? I want desperately to be part of a revoloution where nothing bad happens and the cheese is yummy. And one other thing: Are you going to let Howard Dean back into VT?

I am not a homeless blogger not likely to become one: you'd have to poop on their lap[tops] and chant "Heil Bush" before they would throw you out of the PBA.

Tenth Subject

So yesterday, my fellow San Franciscans and I voted to make guns illegal within the city (guns may no longer be manufactured or owned within city limits, current gun owners have until April 1st to turn thier weapons in to the city). The city also voted in a measure that discourages, but does not prohibit, military recruiting in public schools.

So what do you all think? Can peace be legislated? Is San Francisco protecting the freedoms of its citizens (by prohibiting instruments of violence within city limits), or curtailing the freedom to choose? Am I living in a burgoning utopia, or are we heading for an overly legislated distopia?

Query 9, possibly...

...though it isn't a query so much as an observation that is sure to elicit some response, or my name isn't...um...boyhowdy.

So...background first: I teach at a middle school now...and public schools do things very differently, network-safety-wise, than other places...and this particular district is a bit haphazzard in the way it maintains network and technology in general...and so, anyway, we come to the crux of the matter:

When, at work and thus behind the district sonicwall, I try to go to shaw's "blog" via the sidebar links herein, I get a blackscreen of death and the following message in the browser:

Web Site Blocked-HWRSD Filtering-Your computers location has been logged.

So, the query:

Of all of us, doesn't it seem deliciously fitting that Shaw's site would be the one that gets blocked by a random middle school's filtering software?

(note, of course, that I can see everyone else's blogs and websites. Just not Shaw's.)

A reading suggestion: "An Interrupted Life: The Diaries, 1941-1943" by Etty Hillesum. Admittedly, I have not yet finished, but it is good contemplative sort of reading, provided you do not read the crap they put on the cover. You see, Etty happened to be Jewish in Amesterdam, and happened to die in a concentration camp. So on the cover the NYT Book Review is quoted as saying "Unsurpassed in Holocaust literature." It pisses me off. Granted, she knew what was happening, and she drops a brief mention of it now and then, but her diary is not about the Holocaust. It's about her interior journey and how she relatates to those closest to her. She also has some very tasty quoteables, the latest I have stumbled upon being, "But I can't help feeling that every hotly championed philosophy hides a little lie."
